"What should we wear?"

This is one of the most common questions I am asked when a session is booked, so I thought Id write a little article to help you make your wardrobe choices.

Really, it depends on YOU and what look you are going for. I want you to be YOU, and show your style. If your family is a little bit funky, dress funky. If your family is more the laid back jeans and tees kind of people, well wear jeans and tees. No one wants to "dress up" so much that they look at the photo and think, "Wow we look goofy!!"

My photography style is about real life and I want you to look at your photos and really relate to them.  So its hard for me to tell you what to wear exactly. Here are a few pieces of advice I have found over my time as a photographer.

1. Avoid clothing with large prints, fonts, pictures. Its distracting.
2. Avoid too many prints or patterns. Everyone does not look great in plaid!
3. Try to keep everyone in similar colour palettes. For example, blue/greens/purples.
4. When in doubt, jeans always look great in photos, just add a coloured top. Jeans with white shirts always look fresh, especially at the beach. Jeans are timeless.  See the Todd Family here
5. Add a colour pop - yellow, reds, pinks, are GREAT to photograph, but in moderation. Keep the pants and shirt neutral and add colour in your accessories such as a bright belt, or scarf, or shoes! Pops of colours look great when shooting in a neutral background like the beach. See here
6. Speaking of, don't forget the shoes! See an idea for accessories here
7. Find one item of clothing you really LOVE and plan the rest of the outfits around it.
8. Use PROPS for colour - a funky bright chair, balloons, or even food like yummy pink donuts or bright red watermelon! Pop of watermelon
9. Remember that even though we may be doing a holiday or seasonal shoot, you do not need to dress in your best holiday gear. This way your photo can stay hung up all year long, not just during the holidays!

Places to look -
Esty - always original accessories!
Pinterest - start a pinboard of colour ideas!
Google Images - just type in "photography" or "family photography" or "urban photography" or "vintage" etc, whatever look you are going for.

Hope this helps!
